Oragami for my Car

Posted in General | Gadgets at Thursday, March 9, 2006 1:51 AM Pacific Standard Time
Now that oragami has been revealed, I want one, but not so much to use as an ultra mobile pc, but more as a navigation system/audio system for my car that I can take with me to watch a movie if I want. I was looking into the AVN5500 for my VW Passat, but after seeing Oragami I'm thinking why spend $1600 on that system when I could probably get an oragami device (for less) that I can dock in my car? I'd be interested to know if any of the hardware makers are working on a docking station for cars...

Exactly what I first thought when I saw it!

hah that would be really cool...good idea..car dock, only thing is that it might not be street legal to have a device like this, since it's still illegal to have a screen that plays video in the front seat, navigation only screens are exceptions (at least in CA)...so i'm doubtful that hardware makers will make 1 for cars

Bryant you can just make 1 as your weekend project and mass produce it for the rest of us ;)

I have been doing this for a while with the Sony U750P. I have added a bluetooth GPS receiver and am using Delorme's StreetAtlas software.
I must say though, there doesn't seem to be ANY PC navigation software that actually has a good use-while-driving type interface. I just want something simple like a TomTom. At least the touchscreen allows easy zooming.

Check out my original U750P post for pics. I just used Sony's docking station. I'm disappointed so far with the specs of the UMPCs, they are too big. They would not fit where I put the U750P in my car.
